| Clam AntiVirus (ClamAV) is a free, cross-platform antivirus software tool-kit capable of detecting many types of malicious software, including viruses. ClamAV consist of the following parts: freshclam.exe is the program that updates the virus definition files. clamd.exe is the scanning engine, which should run all the time as a service. clamdscan.exe is used to scan the file. clamdscan.exe connects to clamd.exe and clamd.exe scans the file. This is very fast, because the virus definition files are loaded only once at startup of the service. clamscan.exe is also used to scan the file. However, clamscan.exe doesn't connect to clamd.exe and so it always load the virus definition files.

Update using task scheduler executing
C:\clamav-devel\bin\freshclam.exe --quiet --config-file=C:\clamav-devel\etc\freshclam.conf

Virus definition files are updated only when someone is logged on.

There is no clamdscan.exe, only clamscan.exe.
clamscan.exe needs to find the database and this requires the additional argument of
--database="C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\.clamwin\db"
